A Friend like Me || Us Lovely Corpses (PC)

“I like to make even villains people you can relate to. When you find out who did it, I think you almost like the person, which is not easy to do.” –Harlan Coben

Seems not at all ominous...

Us Lovely Corpses is a visual novel style game created by d Marie. You play as Alejandra de Rose, a witch on her first solo mission. This job isn’t new to her, however, since Marisol is her best friend and she’s become used to having to clip the roses to save her.

Marisol has been cursed since she was a baby by a monster. While the monster didn’t physically harm her, the monster has stayed with her to this day. The monster kidnaps Marisol to the attic and ensnares the house in vines and roses to keep others at bay. That’s where Alejandra and her grandmother come in, to tame the monster back and save Marisol.

To be fair, I would be flipping out too...

I felt that the monster was like an allegory for a mental illness in some ways. The roses that you interact with, if you listen to them, they talk about some very relatable topics, including self-harm and self-depreciation. Marisol seems to deal with some very real struggles related to her condition, and I can appreciate that since I deal with a lot of the same struggles.

I don’t want to spoil anything in the game in any way, but if you want to play for yourself to see the endings, you can download the game free from Itch.io *here* What did you think of your ending? Be sure to leave your feedback for the creator on their Itch.io page.

Thank you, as always. Until next time!

Oceanic Hearts (PC)

“You are like the ocean, pretty enough on the surface, but dive down into your depths and you’ll find beauty that most people never see.” --Unknown

Source: Screen Capture from Game

Oceanic Hearts is a short yuri dating simulator game created by the Krispy Cat team of butterfly-patte(Kris) and riribelle(Cathy). You play as Marina, a young mermaid who is at the age that she needs to choose a suitor to marry. However, because of procrastination, most of the suitors awaiting her gave up and left. Marina has only two suitors left to choose from: the refined and elegant Delphine, or the child-like and carefree Cora. Who will she choose?

I found this game very cute and innocent. Often when people see yuri, it’s all in a manner of sex, but this games innocent charm made it enjoyable on its own. The sprites are cute, and the music is beautiful as well.

There are 3 endings, and it is easy enough to get them all. The choices are easy to discern so it’s easy to choose one or the other. Cora likes flowers so you’ll find her in the garden, and Delphine can sing so you find her in the music hall. I played through all 3 endings, and I like Delphine more as a character(she’s just more my style). Cora is cute, but the quiet type is more for me.

This game was enjoyable to play, and it short enough to not take up too much of your time(It took me about 20 minutes to get all 3 endings). The game is free to download and play so if you would like to try it for yourself, you can download it from the Itch.io page *here*.

As always, be sure to leave your words of encouragement, or helpful criticism, for the creators to help them improve their skills and future projects!

Ciiko's Bridge (PC)

"I believe there is another world out there, a better word, and I'll be waiting for you there."

Source: Screen Capture from Game

Ciiko’s Bridge is a visual novel, adventure rpg created by Skyharborr. You may remember Skyharborr from one of my demo blogs (this one *here*) where I talked about a demo for their new game “A Fox in the Hollyhocks”—which I loved. Ciiko’s Bridge is a story about an adventurous boy named Taku, and his protective older brother, Jinsuke.

On this day, Taku is preparing to go on another adventure into the forest to see what he can find. Before we go adventuring though, we need to eat some breakfast! Jinsuke sends Taku off to Kamiya general store to get some milk. Taku sets off and gets to the store. Once there, he talks with Shinji a bit. Shinji tells Taku that old man Eden is coming by and telling his famous stories today. Excited to hear old man Eden’s story, Taku takes the milk and hurries home. Sadly, it seems Taku missed his story, but Jinsuke fills Taku in:

When the fog is thick, if you take 2 and a half silver coins, hold them tightly in your hand and walk under the bridge, you’ll be transported to another dimension.

Taku is fascinated by this story, and he can’t wait to try it himself! The next day when the fog rolls in, Taku sees his chance. Jinsuke firmly protests, but after arguing, pleading and crying, Jinsuke relents, telling him to be careful. Taku agrees and off he goes to the bridge. Holding the 2 and a half silver coins in his hand, Taku prepares himself, then walks under the bridge through the fog…

Once Taku passes under the bridge he finds himself in an unknown place. This new place is a stunning forest. As Taku tries to gain his bearings in this unknown place, he is greeted by a figure that greatly resembles Shinji. The figure tells Taku that he is the Passagekeeper, and explains a little bit about how the multiverse works. Such as, you can only travel to a world where “you” do not already exist. So Taku was able to come to this world, the forest of Caligo, because no other Taku exists here.  Caligo is also ruled by the Forest Lord.

Taku also learns that to return home he will need another 2 and a half silver coins, since the coins are taken as fare. Silver does not appear common in Caligo, however, so Taku will have to try to work for it. So, Taku travels into the forest to find some of the locals to see what he can do to earn some money.

There are five others to meet in Caligo Forest. Prince Ratsu, who is a faun, Tanukawa, the racoon dog, Riku and Hare, the conjoined pair, and the Forest Lord. Using a bartering system, you’ll have to find ways to make everyone happy so that they will pay you.

Source: Itch.io Page

I really appreciated the bartering system. I love a good bartering system, and Ciikos does a good job, for the most part. You CAN barter yourself into a corner, and only a certain number of items will provide the needed reactions from Ratsu. I created different saves to help protect myself, and it look me about 3 tries to get the combinations and reactions down.

The artwork in this game is super adorable, skyharborr is quite a talented artist. The music and sound effects are also fitting and well done. The colors are soft, but vibrant, and the characters are unique and interesting.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed this game, despite the trouble I had a few times with the bartering system. There are a total of 5 endings, I believe, and I got two of them. Both of the endings I received were sweet and very heartwarming, so a heartwarming ending to a cute little game. The game is a bit longer, it took me about 45 minutes to an hour to complete the game the first time. If you would like to give this game a try for yourself, please download the game from its Itch.io page *here*.

As always, be sure to leave your words of encouragement or helpful criticism for the creator as well, to help them improve future creations.

Syrup and the Ultimate Sweet for PC

“When people ask for candy I am eating, I give them the flavor I don’t like.”

Source: Itch.io Page

Syrup and the Ultimate Sweet is an adorable about making friends and accepting each other. I suppose it is sort of a dating sim game, but honestly I found it more innocent friendship than anything else. It certainly isn’t hot and heavy romance like I’m used to. In any case, Syrup and the Ultimate Sweet was created by Nami, and this game exists within the same universe as some of her other games involving a wolf girl named Treat! I have played through the Treat series games, and I will review them another time(2/19/17 keep an eye out!).

In the game you play as Syrup, the candy Alchemist. Syrup has forsaken the ways of Magic and uses purely science and her own two hands to create delicious candies, as opposed to a witch like Butterscotch who creates candy by using magic. Syrup sells her science candy in her sweets shop, Atelier Sweets, with the help of her assistant, Pastille. Syrup is sort of a hermit(hey, a character I can relate to!), and she spends the majority of her time in her lab working on sweets while Pastille runs the shop.

One day, Syrup enters her lab to find an adorable pink candy golem waiting for her! The only problem is that in order to create a golem, magic is required. Since Syrup is completely opposed to magic of any kind… who created the golem, and why? The answer to this question is actually pretty obvious after about 2 minutes. Anyhow, this is where the game really begins. Every choice you make matters towards your ending, and there are plenty of endings to try to get. I managed to get the romantic endings with Gumdrop(the golem), and Butterscotch, as well as an ending with Syrup getting rich, bad endings 1 and 2, and the Candibal ending. I really wanted the romantic ending with Pastille, but I just couldn’t get it right!

One of my favorite things about this game was the overly adorable sprites and artwork. The big eyes and bright colors get me every time. The characters themselves are also likable. Syrup was a relatable character for me, but each character is well crafted and realistic(in personality). I also love the music. The music the creators chose works well for the scenes that they accompany.

Overall I greatly enjoyed this game. There is a good amount of game play time, and a decent amount of endings(for a free game). I wish I had been able to get the other endings, but I didn’t want to use a guide(I’m weird and prefer to win games on my own merit). The game can be found for free on Itch.io *here*. I highly recommend giving it a play to see what you think—and as always, be sure to leave some kind words or helpful criticism to help the developers further… develop.
